COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT - Registration is open!

  • March 17, 2012 0800 to Dusk - Kalashnikov Rifle

(1 day, primary instructor: Freddy Wissing)

    Location - NHRPC (http://nhrpc.org)

The Kalashnikov rifle is the most successful and prolific rifle design in modern history. Produced in several dozen countries, and in countless varieties, it has a fantastic and storied history. Although a lot of people own them, few have taken a hard look at measuring their effectiveness with this sturdy and robust platform, and fewer still consider that the likelihood of encountering a Kalashnikov anywhere in the world is 10:1 greater than any other rifle. If you have one of these rifles and are interested in exploring what it can do, and what you can be capable of with it compared to your performance with other rifles, this is a great course for you.

This course is focused on the shooter who perhaps has done some tactical shooting and is interested in becoming effective with a Kalashnikov platform, developing good fundamentals, or stopping bad habits before they turn into training scars. The course has a personal-protection/defensive focus but many of the skills learned are co-equal to practical competition. The course curriculum is Kalashnikov-specific. Although it retains the valuable drills common to all tactical shooting and relevant practical competitive sports, it is biased toward using the Kalashnikov platform effectively rather than take a dogmatic approach. We look forward to covering these areas:

  • Basic Mechanical Operation and review
  • Disassembly, inspection, cleaning
  • Readiness checks
  • Basic Handling skills (loading, speed reloading techniques, press-checks, malfunction clearing)
  • BRM Review (Basic Rifle Marksmanship)
  • What is required to shoot the Kalashnikov accurately, and why
  • Zeroing - Where to zero, and why
  • Equipment choices
  • Properly organizing and laying out your loadout
  • Stance, presentation, maintaining SA and control before, during, and after target engagement
  • The many uses of the buttstock toolkit
  • Ready positions, escalating levels of alertness
  • Overcoming "traditional disadvantages" commonly associated with the Kalashnikov
  • "Система" Style Multidirectional engagement drills from standing, kneeling, and prone
  • Shooting positions, including Urban/Rice Paddy/SBU/Rollover prone variations
  • Developing effective Kalashnikov-specific handling skills
  • Effective cornering with a carbine
  • Rapid Engagement drills
  • Retention and Disarmament considerations with long arms
  • Transitioning to support side, and making it work
  • Transitioning to sidearm - Kalashnikov specific techniques
  • Shooting effectively on the move
  • Engaging moving targets
  • Engagement distances for this course will be from 3 to 200 yards.

You will leave the course with a properly zeroed Kalashnikov rifle, and have a firm grasp of the basics of being effective with this rifle. We may include other elements if there are demand for them. Please let us know. Cost of the course is a very reasonable $150.00. 10% MIL/LE discount. Round count should be around 300 per day minimum to fulfill the curriculum. Bring more, shoot more. Note that funds must be received within one week of registration confirmation, and refunds will be granted with no questions asked until Feb. 20th. After that date refunds will not be granted without a substitute student available. If we have a standby student or you provide one, it's no problem. If the course is cancelled by reasons beyond our control everyone gets a full refund.
